Bell III, she was the first woman president of a major University (University of South Florida); first woman elected to the Florida Cabinet Commission of Education (1987-1993); elected to the Senate in 1976, resigned to run as Lieutenant Governor; reelected to the Senate in 1982; served as the first woman pro-tempore (1934-1986).
1996 Florida Women's Hall of Fame inductee.
