Biographical Note
The Blitzen was built in France specifically to challenge the Stanley Steamer driven by Fred Marriott. It was later purchased by Ernest Moross and brought to Daytona Beach. On March 16, 1910, Barney Oldfiled blew through the Measured Mile time traps for a new world record of 131.72 mph.
The name Blitzen Benz was changed to Lightening Benz after Oldfield set his record, but it was determined in highly paid exhibition runs that the foreign name added publicity value, so it was changed back to Blitzen.
