General Note
The Governor Cobb was 290' long, 51' wide, and a draft of 14'. It could accommodate 200 passengers in berths, with 175 staterooms.
Biographical Note
It was built by the Delaware River Shipbuilding Company in Chester, Pennsylvania. The Parsons turbine engines were built by W. and A. Fletcher boat yard. It was named after the governor of Maine, William Titcomb Cobb, of Rockland, Maine. The average speed was 18.4 knots. It was owned by the Eastern Steamship Company and chartered by the Peninsular and Occidental Steamship Company. It usually travelled the Knights Key - Key West - Havana run, until the completion of the Overseas Railroad, when it did the Key West to Havana run, as well as the Tampa to Havana run. It was replaced by the Florida in 1932. It saw service in World War II as a Coast Guard helicopter vessel, WPG 181, and was renamed the USS Cobb. It was scrapped in 1948.
