Dude was an orphaned boy raised by Willard.
During the Civil War, Willard was Captain of Company C of the Florida Reserves. Later, he was Sheriff of Madison County (1877-1880); State Senator from Madison (1881); State Representative from Alachua County (1903); and Mayor of High Springs (1910-1911).
