Biographical Note
Rose Weiss was born as Rivka Sayetta in Russia in 1885, and immigrated to New York with her family in 1892. She moved from Brooklyn, New York to Miami Beach in 1920. Weiss was highly involved in community organizations and projects. She was one of the earliest members of the young city's Chamber of Commerce, and was instrumental in developing Miami Beach's welfare department in the late 1920s. She also suggested the city's official slogan, "Forward with Caution," and designed the city's flag. These contributions, plus her frequent attendance at city council meetings, led many to refer to Weiss as the "Mother of Miami Beach," and an "unelected councilman" of the city. In 1975, the City of Miami Beach passed Resolution 75-14749 assigning the name "Rose Weiss Park" to a public space at the corner of Washington Avenue and Second Street.
