This one-room schoolhouse for African American children, Station I School, formerly known as Chaires School, is recorded in the Leon County School Board minutes as early as the 1870s and was located about 9 miles east of Tallahassee in rural Leon County. Shown here is one of two buildings that housed the school, which carried grades one through ten, and later grades one through six. The school closed in 1967 as a result of desegregation.
