Also known as Fernandina Plaza State Historic Site.
Fort San Carlos was a wood and earth fort built by the Spanish in 1816 during the Second Spanish Period. Containing eight to ten guns, it was occupied several times by invading forces, including the U.S. in 1817. The fort was soon abandoned after the 1821 transfer of Florida from Spain to the United States. The site sits atop a bluff along the Amelia River on Estrada Street in Fernandina, on the northern end of Amelia Island. State archaeologists estimate that by the 2000s, at least two-thirds of the fort was lost to erosion. The site was purchased for $450 by the State of Florida, and became part of the Florida Park Service (as part of Fort Clinch State Park) in 1949.
The river behind the site is the Amelia River.
The text of the Florida Park Service sign reads: The Plaza. It was held under eight flags which flew over historic Amelia island. Here stood Fort San Carlos.
