General Note
Anclote Key marks the mouth of the Anclote River in Pinellas County. A lighthouse on the key rose 102 feet and was built in 1887. The Coast Guard automated the light in 1952, but discontinued its use in 1985 as other, smaller lights surrounding the island provided sufficient navigational aid. Before 1952, keepers occasionally participated in rescues in the Gulf, including the 1919 rescue of Tarpon Springs sponge divers. On 1 July 1960, the 102-acre key became the Anclote Key Preserve State Park under the Florida Park Service.
