The home was built in the late 1840's by Martha Murry's slaves on 1,000 acres, and it was located 10 miles south of Monticello on the left side of Capps Road. Asa May married Margaret Murry on December 23, 1846. The home was later sold to a oil developer for $20,000.
The Asa May House exhibits characteristic of the Greek Revival style, interpreted in a provincial setting. The exterior is constructed of cypress, the interior of heart pine. The bricks used for the chimneys and piers were made on the place. There appear to be no additions and only a few minor alterations. Architectural evidence indicates that the hours was built circa 1840. It is one of the few early plantation houses still standing in Jefferson County and is structurally sound today.
