General Note
Born in Orange, New Jersey, John Stetson learned hat making from his father. In 1865, he moved to Philadelphia and began making his famous Stetson hats. After making millions, Stetson began sponsoring charitable and educational organizations, including both Temple and Stetson universities. He later moved to DeLand, Florida where he lived until his death in 1906.
New York philanthropist Henry A. DeLand founded Florida?s first private university, DeLand University, in 1883. In 1889, the name was changed to Stetson University in honor of founding trustee and major donor John B. Stetson.
