Isaac Duenas, a Cuban-American from North Miami Beach, makes farolas, gigantes, and rooster figures to celebrate the holiday honoring La Virgen de la Candelaria, the patron saint of San Antonio de las Vueltas, Cuba.
Duenas is training his son, David Duenas, and Ramon Zepeda to make the ritual figures. The apprentices want to learn the tradition as a way to become more familiar with their cultural roots and to teach it to their children.
