General Note
General William Bailey was born in 1790, in Camden County, Georgia. He then moved to Jefferson County in 1824. He was a prosperous planter who established cotton and woolen mills in Leon County. He bought "The Columns" in 1847, and moved his family there in 1862. He founded and was president of the State Bank of Florida (later known as the Lewis State Bank) in 1856. During the war between the states, he clothed at his expense, 2 companies of the 5th Florida Regiment commanded by his 2 sons. Also he owned and operated a salt works on the coast. He was present at the battle of Olustee, and he is also known as "The richest man in Florida".
