Physical Description
General Note
Blowing Rocks Preserve is a magnificent barrier island sanctuary located on Jupiter Island, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. It began in 1969, when far-sighted and generous residents of Jupiter Island donated 73 acres of their island to the Nature Conservancy. Though the dark, jagged rocks look like the remains of a misplaced lava flow, they are actually a specific type of sedimentary rock called Anastasia limestone, also known as coquina. Blowing Rocks protects a variety of natural habitats, including beach dune, coastal strand, mangrove wetlands, tropical hammock and oak hammock.
