Description
Commercial fishing is a major industry in Florida with a lengthy legacy. For generations, Florida fishermen have set out from the coast in search of a hefty catch, often using nets they themselves either made or repaired by hand. Seine nets, cast nets, and shrimp trawls are examples of nets commonly used around the state. Many nets now include machine-woven mesh, but fishermen often still prefer the handmade variety.

Food Fights for Freedom campaign - Mobilization Guide, ca. 1943

Date
1943 (circa)
Description
This mobilization guide, entitled "How to Mobilize Your Community to Make Food Fight for Freedom," was produced by the War Food Administration and the Office of Price Administration in cooperation with the Office of War Information and the Office of Civilian Defense. The guide was designed mainly for local civil defense leaders to use in deploying strategies to conserve food at the local level. The guide describes the objectives of the Food Fights for Freedom campaign, including educating the public about the importance of food, growing the right kinds of food at the right time of year, curtailing waste, cooperating with the rationing program, preserving food, etc. Suggested stratgies for educating the public on how to achieve these goals included home visits, community meetings, theater, press and radio announcements, award programs, proclamations, parades, information booths, exhibits, poster contests, and community food projects.
