Description
Two reel to reel recordings. Williams was born 15 February 1919 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. After traveling with several acts in the 1930s/1940s, he moved to Florida to work the citrus groves. He always played the diddly bow, a one-string instrument played throughout that south that functioned as a primitive guitar. Moses talked about his songs; professional nicknames; the music business; working for the Silas Green Traveling Show as a clown; how he wrote his songs; performing on Beale Street in Memphis; and the history of blues music. In addition, Williams plays several of his songs. (The reels T81-16 and T81-17 may be a duplicate recording of this interview.)

Description
One audio cassette. A thirty-year veteran of Florida circuses, Brown, by the time of the interview, spent his time repairing circus wagons. He discusses working for Eastern Airlines; move to Jacksonville in 1932; his early interest in circuses; types of circuses he watched as young man; types of clowns; acrobatic, and animal acts; first work with circuses in 1950s; employment with the Hoxie Brothers Circus and a 'wild west show'; various circus jobs and duties; treatment of circus animals; circuses in Florida; life of a circus worker; travel with circuses; performers; hierarchy of workers; family acts; performer training; and future of circuses. NOTE: According to the depositor's agreement, the material in the interview specifically cannot be used for newspaper articles. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Duval County was a joint venture between the Duval County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was started in 1984 by folklorist David Taylor with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curriculum. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, and in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist which included visits by local folk artists. Taylor ran it until 1986. In 1988, Gregory Hansen re-initiated it with minor changes.
