Mary Jane Hendry Blount was born January 4, 1845 to James E. Hendry and Lydia Carlton, one of five sisters of Captain Francis Hendry for whom Hendry County is named. She moved to Fort Myers from Fort Meade, with the Hendry family in 1872. These families were 2 of the 5 that founded the First Methodist Church of Fort Myers, the mother church of the area.
