Accompanying note: "The Lake Munson Canoe (8LE5785) was exposed during a recent draw down of the lake. It is a prehistoric dugout canoe approximately 500 to 800 years old. It was made from a pine or cypress hollowed out by prehistoric inhabitants of the Fort Walton cultural period (1000 AD to 1450 AD) using fire and stone tools. Exhibiting a platform on either end, it is incredibly well preserved."
"BAR [Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research], FPAN [Florida Public Archaeology Network] and Panhandle Archaeological Society at Tallahassee (PAST) members work in unison to carry the water-logged canoe to dry land using carefully positioned straps suspended by wooden boards."
Clockwise from left: Roger Smith, Paul Chamberlain, Ed Green, Barbara Hines, Lonnie Mann, Kevin Porter, David "Dave" Dickel, Daniel "Dan" McClarnon, Franklin Price, Kellie Bowers, Historic Conservator James Levy, Eric Holdos. Standing in the background at the left is State Archaeologist Ryan Wheeler.
