Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park was purchased by the State of Florida from Camp Ranch in 1970 (9219 acres) , and conveyed it the Florida Park Service in 1971. It was the first preserve in the park system. It was located off U.S. 441 10 miles South of Gainesville.
