Alan B. Shepard, Jr. enters his spacecraft "Freedom 7" before beginning his historic suborbital flight down the Atlantic Missile Range May 5, 1961. This very successful mission demonstrated, before the eyes of the world, that man could not only survive, but perform useful tasks in the environment of space. Shepard's 115 mile high, 302 mile long journey paved the way for Project Mercury's specification mission - a manned 3-orbital flight around the earth.
