The Castillo de San Marcos, oldest fort in the United States, was built by the Spanish in 1672. During the Seminole Wars the fort was used as a prison for the famous Seminole leaders, Osceola and Wild Cat.Called Fort Marion at this time, The Castillo was made a National Monument in 1924.
