David Walker "DW" Harris is shown using the fire pole at Station 1 when it was located at 109 S. Adams Street. The current Station 1, located at 327 N. Adams Street, has three fire poles from the second to the first floors and one exterior fire pole in an exterior stair case from the third floor to the second floor.
The fire pole was invented in 1878 by Captain David Kenyon of the Chicago Fire Department. The fire pole allows firefighters to go from floor to floor faster than by using stairs.
The Tallahassee Fire Department provides emergency services from fires and fire hazards, as well as first response to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. Its mission is to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property, protect the environment, assist in cooperative emergency medical services, mitigate the consequences of natural and unforeseen disasters, and provide non-emergency support services, through professional and effective delivery, to all who live, visit, work or invest in the City of Tallahassee and Leon County.
