  • Shown following STS-53 mission that took place between December 2 (launch) and December 9 (landing) 1992.
  • The first Discovery mission was on August 30, 1984. It was the 12th shuttle mission. Discovery has flown 37 flights, completed 5,247 orbits, and has spent 322 days in orbit. Discovery is the orbiter fleet leader, having flown more flights than any other orbiter in the fleet. It is scheduled to fly the last space shuttle mission: STS-133 set for launch in September 2010.
  • Accompanying note: "The space shuttle Discovery riding piggyback on a 747 made a detour on its route from Texas to the Kennedy Space Center and did a low flyover of the Capitol."
