General Note

  • Also known as The Artists Colony, it was built circa 1920 for Mr. Frank E. Maseland and Mr. Horace Linton and their partners by the South Florida Contractor's and Engineering Company. Later added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on October 24, 1996. The Professional Building is historically significant as a symbol of the fireproof construction that was mandated by the City Building Codes following a downtown fire in 1896. The intent was to establish a single location for tourist and other visitors to go to when in need of services from doctors, dentists, lawyers, and other professional people. It is portioned in a Classic five segment block that contains ten bays or interior spaces on each floor. The floors are 7,500 square feet each with the first floor being commercial and the second being residential.

Stairs to the second floor are located just inside the doors, 4. small efficiency apartment, 5. looking southeast at northwest elevation, 6. the segemented bays of the front (west) facade are articulated by three projecting bays and two recessed sections, 7. around 1937 the northwest corner of the building was altered by creating a canted corner entrance with curved walls, the upper half of which is filled with glass blocks, 8. a series of rear entrance doors and small windows are located along the first story of the east elevation, 9. interior view, 10. the entire block is centered on a formal entrance with pediment, 11. looking north at south elevation, 12. interior view, 13. interior view, 14. the first story is divided into ten commercial bays, each with an entrance door and a large display window, 15. the most noteworthy design aspect of this structure is its use of a five (5) part segmented design for the front (west) facade.
