General Note

  • The first one-teacher school house was used both as a school and a meeting place for the Congregational Church from 1882 to 1884 when their church building was constructed. After a new school was built in 1890, this school served the black community as a school and church.
  • Accompanying note: "This one room building served as a school until replaced by the three room school and hall. The only colored family in area--descendants of Caroline South Jackson (born into slavery) also attended this school. This information was given by Robert McArdle Keown, Sr. born October 27, 1879 who started at this school."
