General Note

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The holiday recognized the armistice signed in World War I by the Allies and Germany in 1918 that ended combat between the two sides. Armistice Day was created to specifically honor those who fought in World War I. Armistice Day became a legal holiday in 1938, but the holiday was renamed "Veterans Day" in 1954 and expanded to honor veterans of all American wars.
