General Note

  • Accompanying note: "Now to get the last bunch of wheels out of my noodle. The surveyors in the Florida Everglades were having a hard time trying to plot the land. There was saw grass six to eight feet tall and so thick a snake would have to bend his crooked back to get through. Water was every place, six inches to ten feet deep. In 1911 I was called to Miami, Florida and asked to devise some way to subdue the everglades, home of the alligators and skeeters."
  • "While at Miami I called on all of the interested parties, especially the land agents. Next I went to Fort Lauderdale and out into the everglades. I stayed there a week studying the problems from every angle including going out with the surveyors. Surveyors used a long narrow boat to carry supplies, eats, and bedding. These were drawn by men who would cut by hand and clear the right-of-way of grass, brush, and any trees so surveyors could set stakes and run lines. When they got too far into the everglades to easily return, they would build a mound of saw grass and other growth to try to get a little rest and sleep between the bull gators bellowing, thinking of snakes and skeeter bites."
