General Note
The Monument of States, located in Kissimmee, Florida, was begun in 1942 by local tourism booster Dr. Charles Bressler-Pettis to demonstrate American unity after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After writing letters to every governor and the U.S. president for rocks and fossil, he had a 50-foot tower constructed representing all 48-states, which was dedicated in 1943. Later rocks from Hawaii and Alaska, as well as 21 countries, were added to the surrounding walkway. In 2001, following the 9-11 attacks, the tower was refurbished.
Note in border at top left: "East view" and at bottom: "Tourist paradise".
Accompanying note on back: "WORLD'S MOST UNIQUE MONUMENT. Built of 1,500 stones. Every state in the U.S.A., 45 governors and 21 foreign countries represented. Base 22 ft. square. Height 50 ft. Weight 600,000 lbs. 2 years to build. Sponsored and built by the Kissimmee-All States Tourist Club, Inc."
