Fort Pickens occupied the western tip of Santa Rosa Island commanding the eastern entrance to Pensacola Harbor. Completed in 1834, the fort is pentagonal in shape, with a bastion at each of the five corners. In the fort are cells in which Geronimo, the Apache chief, and his followers were imprisoned in 1886. Fort Pickens became a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore in 1971.
