General Note
It was a festive occasion about 1921, when a cornerstone was laid for a new building at the University of Florida, then only about 15 years old. The exact date and location of this view are unknown. The flavor of the 1920's was beginning to appear--note the "skimmer" straw hats worn by many of the men; but the women still wore somber clothing which only hinted at the styles to come later. In the right rear of this gathering are young men in Army uniform, which may be part of, or the end of, the World War I era, when the university was changed to a Students Army Training Camp for 300 young men.
