General Note
Accompanying note: "Not as many as two out of four houses have a source of water ...close by. Vexing and discouraging to anyone with a desire for personal and household cleanliness are the high cost of a reliable well ($600 and up) and the difficulty of getting a quantity of water without one. When it has to be conveyed in bottles, milk cans or buckets, by hand, mule or car, water is used sparingly. Cooking, drinking and the huge weekly wash come first."
