  • Note sign reads, "Fuerte de Matanzas The stone tower was built in 1742. It had six cannons, a cistern for water, quarters for fifty men, and a magazine for munitions. The cannon of the fort prevented enemy ships from entering the inlet to the south."
  • The fort ruin, designated a National Monument by presidential proclamation in 1924, was transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service in 1933.
