Accompanying note: "Erected on the spot where Pedro Menendez de [Aviles] landed in 1565. Here the first Holy Mass was celebrated; scene of martyrdom of Father Rodriquez and a Franciscan Brother during Indian Revolt, 1597. Abandoned during border raids from Georgia. Rebuilt by Bishop Verot, 1873, blown down by a storm a year later. Erected by Bishop Curley in 1918. Restored and furnished as a Chapel by Mrs. Gen. Hardin, in memory of Gen. Martin D. Hardin, 1925."
