Singer-songwriter Will McLean was often called the "Father of Florida Folk." The Black Hat Troubadour, a nickname for the hat he usually wore, authored over 3700 songs, and was a national figure on the folk music scene. In 1989, McLean was honored with the Florida Folk Heritage Award. A fifth generation Floridian, he died of cancer in January 1990. He was posthumously inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 1996.
