Note marker reads, "FORT PICKENS Site first selected and used by the Spanish as a fort about 1719. After Spain ceded Florida to U.S., Federal Gov't. authorized and established Fort named after Gen. Andrew Pickens of SC in 1829. One of three forts in South continually held by US Army during Civil War 61-65, thereby denying to Confederates the use of the largest deep water harbor and warship building facilities on Gulf Coast. Active in Spanish American, World Wars I and II. State Park since 1949. [Later became a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore in 1971]"
