• Accompanying note: "A compulsory, free brucellosis test of cattle in Florida is being carried out now in the Big Bend region...Brucellosis in animals is similar to undulant fever in people. The disease offers no outward signs of infection, causes cows to lose their unborn calves by abortion and can be detected only through blood tests. The tests now being made are free and for every cow discovered to have brucellosis the State and Federal governments give farmers up to $25 per head on range cattle and up to $35 per head on pure-bred stock. All cattle found to have brucellosis are destroyed. State authorities hope to finish the current program by 1960. Blood samples are sent to Jacksonville for testing and results are usually known in two or three days."
