General Note

  • This was the first locomotive to enter Key West via the overseas extension.
  • Builder: Baldwin Locomotive Works, const. no. 36130. Wheel arrangement: 4-6-0. Diameter of driving wheels: 47". Boiler pressure: 200 psi.
  • Originally owned by Rentz Lumber as engine number 101; then owned by Georgia Car and Locomotive Company as engine number 363; later it was owned by Shreveport Huston and Gulf as engine number 5; then owned by W.T. Carter and Brothers as engine number 5.
  • Work on the overseas extension began in 1905. It was operational from 1912 until the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Financially unable to rebuild, the Florida East Coast Railway sold the roadbed and remaining bridges to the State of Florida, which built the Overseas Highway to Key West, using much of the remaining railway infrastructure. The extension was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as Overseas Highway and Railway Bridges.
