General Note
Shown during the 170th anniversary celebration ceremony of the signing of the 1838 Florida Constitution.
The Constitution Convention Museum State Park at Port Saint Joe commemorates the assembly of the first Constitutional Convention of this State and signing of Florida's first constitution at the vanished town of old St. Joseph on January 11, 1839. A memorial commemorating that first (of five) Florida Constitutional Conventions was erected in 1922 and bears the names of the convention delegates engraved in marble. On March 7, 1950 the City of Port St. Joe donated the memorial to the board of Parks and Historic Memorials (Florida Park Service). In 1954 the city donated additional adjoining property. In 1955 the Florida Park Service opened a museum facility on the 13.5 acre site, which became known as the Constitution Convention Museum State Park.
Note he is holding an enlarged copy of the original dedication ceremony (archives call number RC09103) where he is pointing to his grandfather who was the Attorney General of the state at the time and who wrote the language for the legislation creating the memorial to remember the importance of the time and location of signing.
