General Note
Accompanying note: "Vivian Sherlock, far right, and Eleanor Ketchum, present a proposal to the Florida Cabinet in 1982, seeking its support for a U.S. postage stamp in memory of John Gorrie, the Apalachicola physician who invented the first ice-making machine and played a role in the development of air-conditioning. Sherlock, a native of Apalachicola and longtime resident of Tallahassee, wrote the most extensive biography of Gorrie, 'The Fever Man: A Biography of Dr. John Gorrie,' in 1982. Though the cabinet supported the proposal, the U.S. Postal Service never issued a stamp in Gorrie's honor. Members of the cabinet, from left: Doyle Conner (Commissioner of Agriculture), Gerald Lewis (Comptroller), George Firestone (Secretary of State), Gov. Bob Graham, Jim Smith (Attorney General), Bill Gunter (Treasurer) and Ralph Turlington (Commissioner of Education)."
