Came in 1948 as the vicar of St. Michael's Episcopal Church and served until 1973. He devoted much of his time and attention during the 1950s and 60s to Civil Rights activities. He believed that "the real enemies of peace and progress are poverty, disease, ignorance, prejudice. They corrode society and breed unrest and hatred."
