Biographical Note
Russell Means was a prominent Indian activist in the 1960s and 1970s. Born on the Oglala Lakota (aka Oglala Sioux) Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, he was raised in San Francisco when his family moved as part of a federal relocation program in 1942. In 1968, he joined the radical civil rights group, the American Indian Movement (AIM). He participated in several symbolic occupations, including of Alcatraz Island (1968), Mount Rushmore (1970), Bureau of Indian Affairs (1972) and Wounded Knee (1973). In 1970, he became AIM's national director. He was arrested several times for his political actions, including for murder in 1975, for which he was acquitted. In 2002 he was fully pardoned for any alleged crimes during his activism. He has also campaigned for public office (including for vice-president in 1984), and has starred in several Hollywood films.
