Included in the photograph is Clarence K. Till (wearing badge at right), his two children (Sybil and Emily), his brother Luther and his wife Julia.
Clarence Keitt Till was born in 1873 in Elloree, South Carolina. He went to Key West with the U.S. Army before the Spanish-American War in 1898 and remained in the city after the war. On June 23, 1896 he married Julia Demeritt. He was shot and killed on March 7, 1904 by Herbert "Dutchy" Melbourne while trying to arrest him and the other men who had beaten him earlier that evening. The name of Clarence K. Till is inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. (West Wall, Panel 35, Line 20).
