General Note

  • Born on February 6, 1872 near Arcadia, Florida. Moved to Fort Pierce around 1903 with his wife Teresa Hilliard Carlton. He was elected sheriff of St. Lucie County in 1907. He was shot and killed by night marshal James M. Disney on May 22, 1915 in a downtown "pistol duel". The name of Daniel S. Carlton is inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. (East Wall, Panel 22, Line 6).
