General Note

  • David Cecil Bearden was born on July 6, 1904, in Selma (Chilton County), Alabama. He took an oath of office for the Miami Beach Police Department on January 28, 1926. He was shot and fatally injured by two suspected auto thieves (Cliff Nesbitt and Howard Beck) on March 19, 1928 and though fatally wounded shot both attackers, killing one and wounding the other. He died on March 20th as the first Miami Beach police officer killed in the line of duty. The city proclaimed Bearden a hero and pledged that his sacrifice would never be forgotten. Miami Beach passed a flowery resolution to never forget and yet 56 years later declared fallen Officer Donald Kramer the first to die in the history of the city.
  • "The David Bearden case personifies the title of this book (Forgotten Heroes) more than any of the other 108 Dade officers killed in the line of duty 1895-1995. He was clearly a hero as he killed one and seriously wounded a second fugitive after he was mortally wounded."
  • His name (misspelled as Beardon) is inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. (on Panel 43, East Wall, Line 17).
