  • Accompanying note: "The Kaplans came to Venice in 1949 and for decades were the only Jews who lived there. Samuel Kaplan was the first doctor to practice in Venice and later became instrumental in starting the first hospital there. Sarah Kaplan was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps who served under General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge as a nurse. She was discharged in February 1946."
