General Note

  • Worm grunting is a way to attract worms to the surface in order to gather them for fishing bait. Traditionally, earthworms (specifically the panhandle earthworm, Diplocardia mississippiensis) is said to be attracted by the gentle vibrations created by vocally grunting near the ground. Worm grunters generally sell their catch to fish bait shops. Thousands of dollars were earned in the National Forest from the 1930s through 1970s, until TV journalist Charles Kuralt did a story on the grunters, attracting the attention of the US Forest Service and IRS. Today the industry is regulated.
