General Note
Maypole is a folk dance from West Europe in which dancers, each holding a colored ribbon, dance around a pole. They intertwine their ribbons around the pole. In some cultures, this was a fertility dance. By the twentieth century, it was a popular dance, usually performed by children, at May Day celebrations. Each year, the Florida Folk Festival would hold a Maypole dance.
