General Note
"Santeria is a Cuban religious expression that has become a visible part of folk culture in Miami."
Accompanying note: "Santeria is a religious cult that has been somewhat misunderstood in Miami. Combining the belief of Roman Catholicism and Yoruba (African) religion, Santeria at times disturbs the Western sense of propriety. When cultures come into contact in an urban environment, some traditions may be so unusual or unfamiliar to American society that a great deal of attention is focused upon them. Ideally, the study of folklore enables one to view a variety of cross-cultural practices without making value judgements. It is our hope that exposure to many folk cultures will promote understanding and tolerance. Each culture has unique traditions and fascinating customs; these should be appreciated as a rich addition to our multi-ethnic society."
