Karl and Madira Bickel gave the property on which the mound stands to the state of Florida in 1948. The Madira Bickel Mound State Archaeological Site has the distinction of being the first such location in Florida to be designated a state archaeological site. The Madira Bickel Mounds site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
