General Note
During the Second Seminole War, Osceola emerged as a Seminole military leader. In 1837, he was captured near Fort Payton in St. Johns County by General Thomas Jesup. He was taken to Fort Marion in St. Augustine, then to Fort Moultrie in South Carolina, where he died in 1838.
The sign reads: Osceola captured on this spot while under the protection of a flag of truce, Oct. 26th 1837.
The caption on the rear of the photograph reads: Osceola capture site off Old Kings Road, 100 feet west on Woods Road, 4300 feet south of Fort Payton site marker.
