General Note

  • Dr. John Gorrie (1803-1855) was an early pioneer in the invention of the artificial manufacture of ice, refrigeration, and air conditioning. He was granted the first U.S. Patent for mechanical refrigeration in 1851.
  • The 1.25 acre John Gorrie Museum State Park was given to the Florida Park on 15 April 1955 by the City of Apalachicola to celebrate the inventor of air conditioning.
  • The text on the raised memorial reads: "Served as an officer, Franklin Lodge #6, Apalachicola, Florida"
  • The text on the other memorial reads: "Contributed by the most worshipful Grand Lodge FA&M of Florida, A.L. 5957, A.D. 1957."
